['elgɪn], Marktstadt in der Grampian Region, Schottland, 19 000 Einwohner, Schulzentrum; Gordonstown-Schule (1934 vom Reformpädagogen Kurt Hahn gegründet); Whiskydestillerie, Maschinenbau, Wollindustrie.
 
 
Die 1224 erbaute Kathedrale (1390 zerstört, Chor gut erhalten) gehört zu den bedeutendsten Zeugnissen mittelalterlicher Sakralarchitektur in Schottland.

['elgɪn], seit 1633 schottischer Grafentitel (Earl of Elgin) in der Familie Bruce, die 1647 auch den Titel Earl of Kincardine erhielt. - Bedeutende Vertreter:
 
 1) James Bruce [bruːs], 8. Earl of Elgin, 12. Earl of Kincardine [-kɪn'kɑːdɪn], britischer Politiker, * London 20. 7. 1811, ✝ Dharamsala (Himachal Pradesh, Indien) 20. 11. 1863; war 1842-46 Gouverneur von Jamaika, 1847-54 Generalgouverneur von Kanada, wo er die Selbstverwaltung im Sinne des »Durham-Reports« seines Schwiegervaters J. G. Lambton, Earl of Durham, förderte. 1857 ging er als britischer Bevollmächtigter nach China und handelte dort den (zwischen Frankreich und China gleich lautend abgeschlossenen) Vertrag von Tientsin aus. 1860 leitete er die französisch-britische Expedition gegen China zur Durchsetzung der Verträge. 1862 wurde er Vizekönig von Indien.
 
 2) Thomas Bruce [bruːs], 7. Earl of Elgin, 11. Earl of Kincardine [-kɪn'kɑːdɪn], britischer Diplomat und Kunstsammler, * 20. 7. 1766, ✝ Paris 14. 11. 1841; 1799-1803 Gesandter in Konstantinopel, trug auf seinen Reisen in Griechenland (1803-12) eine bedeutende Sammlung altgriechischer Skulpturen (Elgin Marbles) zusammen.
